No amount of fandom controversy will change the quality of the game itself.This version of the game is open-source on Github and available under the Apache 2.0 license. Sure FNF caused a lot of problems and headaches later down the line, but when you put all of that aside, FNF is still one of the all-time greats of Newgrounds. Buttons are more responsive and note charting is vastly better. It had some problems in the 2020 version, but they have since been fixed up. It makes a lot more sense when you know that FNF is in the same universe as Pico's School, which did the exact same thing.įinally, FNF just feels good to play. It gets to the point where some stuff later in the game causes some serious tonal whiplash.
Everyone looks cute and appealing, and that helps sell the premise. The whole plot is winning over your girlfriend's extended family through music, which is easy to get behind. The call and response style of all the songs removes a lot of the brutal memorization and repetition that you usually need for rhythm games, and the songs themselves are pretty easy anyway (except for Week 7). All the game asks is for you to reach the end of the song. Heck, score is mostly an afterthought in this version. Most rhythm games are notorious for being really hard, and demanding perfection from players. I think there are two things that make FNF what it is: Ease of access and charm. But let's put aside all the history and controversy and just look at the game that's here on Newgrounds.
